Choosing between IB Maths Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) is one of the first big decisions IB students face, and it matters more than most realise. Get it wrong and you either spend two years fighting a course that does not suit you, or you close off university options you had not yet considered.
AA focuses on pure mathematics, algebraic reasoning and proof; AI focuses on mathematical modelling, statistics and technology. AA HL is the expected choice for competitive STEM programmes at most universities. AI suits students heading towards social sciences, business, data and humanities. Both are real, demanding IB maths courses, not interchangeable.
The four courses at a glance
The International Baccalaureate offers four mathematics courses, introduced in their current form for first teaching in 2019 and first examined in May 2021, replacing the older SL, HL and Mathematical Studies structure:

The IBO describes AA as designed for students who enjoy developing mathematical arguments and exploring real and abstract applications, and AI as designed for students who see mathematics as a tool for describing the world and solving practical problems. That distinction is the honest summary of everything that follows.
What each course actually covers
AA (Analysis and Approaches) is closest to a traditional pre-university maths curriculum. You work through algebra, functions, trigonometry, exponentials, logarithms, differentiation and integration, plus a statistics and probability strand. At HL, the course adds complex numbers, proof by induction, further calculus, a more demanding treatment of vectors, and more. A graphical calculator is allowed in some papers, but AA students are expected to work algebraically; technology is a check, not the method.
AI (Applications and Interpretation) covers some of the same ground but the emphasis is entirely different. Technology is not a supplement here: the graphical calculator is central to most of the work. The statistics strand is considerably broader than AA's, the modelling is more explicit, and at AI HL the course extends into differential equations and graph theory. Throughout, the question is "how do we use mathematics to understand this real situation?" rather than "how do we prove or derive this result?"
The overlap is real: both courses include functions, statistics, calculus and geometry. But the spirit of each is distinct. AA asks you to prove things and derive them. AI asks you to model things and interpret them.
What universities actually want
This is where the choice becomes high-stakes for many students.
A significant number of UK and international universities with competitive mathematics, physics and engineering programmes specify or strongly prefer AA HL. The reason is practical: the content of AA HL is much closer to what undergraduate mathematics and engineering courses open with. Proof, rigorous unfacilitated algebra and formal calculus are the foundation of a first-year mathematics degree, and AA HL students arrive already familiar with working that way.
AI HL is accepted by most universities for programmes that are not pure-maths-heavy, and is increasingly recognised in data science and computing contexts. AI SL is broadly accepted for non-STEM courses.
Before you finalise your choice, look up the admissions pages of every university you might realistically apply to. Find their IB subject notes and check whether they name a specific maths course. Some departments are explicit. If you cannot find the answer, email the admissions office directly. This is worth twenty minutes of effort before two years of the wrong course.

How to choose by pathway
Rather than asking which course is easier, ask where you are headed:
- Mathematics, physics, further mathematics, engineering: Take AA, at HL if you can manage it. AA HL is the safer and more natural fit for these degrees. AA SL works for some programmes but limits your options at the top.
- Computer science and data science: Either can work. AI HL is an increasingly natural fit given its focus on statistics and technology; AA SL is widely accepted and keeps options open.
- Biology and chemistry: AA SL is typically sufficient. The statistics content in both courses covers what you need for the sciences.
- Economics: Depends on the programme. Most undergraduate economics courses accept AI; mathematical economics at highly competitive institutions tends to expect AA HL. Check individually.
- Business, psychology, social sciences, humanities: AI SL is typically the most natural match.
- Medicine: No specific maths course is usually required. AA SL or AI SL both work; check your medical schools directly.
Which is "easier"?
AI SL is widely regarded as the most accessible of the four routes, because it is less abstractly demanding and technology does more of the work. AA SL is harder than AI SL for most students. AA HL is one of the most demanding courses in the entire IB. AI HL sits somewhere between: less abstract than AA HL, but with a broader statistics component and its own difficulty.
"Easier," though, is only worth considering if both courses genuinely serve your plans. Taking AI SL to avoid difficulty, then finding your target university expects AA HL, is a decision that is expensive to unpick. Taking AA HL when you do not need it, and having it drain the energy you needed for your Internal Assessments and Extended Essay, is also a poor trade.
Most students are better served by matching the course to their direction than by chasing the easier grade.
Figuring out which type of thinking suits you
Here is the part most students find genuinely difficult: many of you arriving at IB do not yet know whether you are better at abstract algebraic reasoning or applied statistical thinking. Both develop over time, and the course you pick partly shapes which one you become comfortable with.
Some prompts that help:
- When you did GCSE or middle-school maths, did you find the algebra and equation-solving sections satisfying? Or did you prefer the data and statistics work?
- When a maths problem is set in context (a model of a real situation), does the context help you or distract you?
- Do you prefer working through a logical chain of steps to a clean answer, or working with messy data to reach an interpretation?
If your instinct runs clearly one way, follow it. If you are genuinely uncertain, look at the first few chapters of an AA SL and an AI SL textbook (your school should have both) and see which feels more natural after twenty minutes.

Making the final call
A few practical points before you decide:
Check what your school offers. Some IB schools do not run all four courses. If your school only offers AA HL, AA SL and AI SL, the choice is simpler. AI HL is the least common of the four.
Talk to your maths teacher. They have seen many students make this decision and can often tell you honestly which course fits your current mathematical thinking and pace. This is one of the most useful conversations you can have before choosing.
Do not choose based on what your friends are doing. Two years is a long time to spend in a course that does not suit your direction.
If you are genuinely torn between AA SL and AI SL and university requirements do not settle it: ask yourself whether you want maths to be a subject you are pushing into (AA) or a tool you are deploying for other things (AI). Both are valid answers, and either is a reasonable course to take.
The choice is not a verdict on your mathematical ability. It is a strategic decision about where to put two years of effort. Make it deliberately.
