Terms of Service

Last updated: 12 June 2026

The short version

  • Use Root respectfully. Don't abuse it, don't resell it, don't use it to break the law or your school's rules.
  • Paid plans renew automatically. You can cancel anytime and keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for.
  • We may change pricing, usage limits, or features. If we raise prices, we'll give you 30 days' notice before your next renewal. If we remove a paid feature in a way that materially changes what you're paying for, we'll let you know and offer a pro-rata refund.
  • AI can be wrong. Always double-check Root's answers against your textbook, teacher, or another trusted source — especially for high-stakes work.
  • Root is a study aid — not a promise of better grades, and nota counselling, medical, or emergency service. If you're struggling or in danger, please talk to a trusted adult or contact an emergency or support service.
  • You own what you write. We only use it to run the Service for you, and we never use it to train AI models.
  • You must be at least 13 to use Root. If you're under 18, you need a parent or guardian's consent.

The full terms below are the legally binding version. If anything below contradicts the summary, the full terms win.

1. Acceptance of these Terms

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) form a binding agreement between you and Root Tutor AI Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (“Root,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing your use of the website at roottutor.com, the Root web application, and any related services (together, the “Service”).

By creating an account, signing in, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and age requirements

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. The Service is not intended for, and we do not knowingly allow, children under 13. If we learn that someone under 13 has created an account, we will close it and delete their information.

If you are between 13 and the age of majority in your country (typically 18), you may use the free tier on your own, but you must have a parent or legal guardian's consent to subscribe to a paid plan. By subscribing, you confirm that this consent has been given and that the parent or guardian agrees to these Terms on your behalf and, as the contracting party, accepts responsibility for the subscription and its payment. We encourage a parent or guardian to be involved in any under-18's use of the Service, and parents or guardians may request access to, or deletion of, a child's information as described in our Privacy Policy.

You may not use the Service if you have been previously banned from it, if you are barred from receiving the Service under applicable law, or if you are subject to sanctions that would prohibit us from providing it to you.

3. Your account

To use most of the Service you need an account. You agree to provide accurate information, keep your account secure, and not share your login. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at support@roottutor.com if you suspect unauthorised access.

You may have only one account at a time unless we explicitly approve otherwise.

4. The Service

Root is an AI-assisted study companion. It provides, among other features:

  • A conversational AI tutor that helps you learn topics and work through problems.
  • AI-generated practice tests, marking, and feedback based on your inputs.
  • Revision sessions, flashcards, and progress tracking.
  • Personalisation based on your year level, subjects, and study history.
  • Optional study reminder emails — weekly streak reminders and spaced-repetition reminders for topics you have studied. These are sent at most once per day and can be turned off at any time from Settings → Notifications.

The Service is provided as it appears at the time you use it, and parts of it may be offered as experimental, beta, or preview features. We are continuously updating, improving, and changing it. We do not guarantee that any particular feature, model, or capability will remain available indefinitely (see Section 7).

5. Subscriptions, billing, and auto-renewal

5.1 Plans

Root offers a free tier and paid subscription plans (currently Pro, Scholar and Mastery), each with their own prices and usage limits as published on the Pricing page. Plan benefits and limits in effect when you subscribe (or when you renew) are the ones that apply to you.

5.2 Billing

Paid plans are billed in advance through Stripe. By subscribing, you authorise Stripe to charge your nominated payment method for the recurring fee plus any applicable taxes. Prices may be shown excluding taxes; taxes will be added at checkout based on your billing country.

5.3 Auto-renewal

Paid subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (typically monthly) at the then-current price for your plan, unless you cancel before the renewal date. By subscribing, you consent to this auto-renewal.

5.4 Cancellation

You can cancel a paid subscription at any time from Settings → Manage subscription (which opens the Stripe billing portal). Cancellation stops future renewals. You will keep access to your paid plan until the end of the period you have already paid for, after which your account will revert to the free tier. We do not provide pro-rata refunds for partial periods on cancellation, except where required by law or as set out in Section 5.6.

When you cancel, we may offer optional alternatives such as a temporary pause of your subscription or a time-limited discount. These offers are discretionary, may be one-time or limited per account, and may be changed or withdrawn at any time.

5.5 Failed payments

If a payment fails, we may retry the charge, suspend access to paid features, or downgrade your account to the free tier. You remain responsible for any unpaid amounts. If you initiate a chargeback or payment dispute that we reasonably believe is unfounded, we may suspend your account while the dispute is investigated.

5.6 Your 14-day cooling-off right (UK / EEA consumers)

If you are a consumer in the UK or EEA, you normally have a statutory right to cancel a purchase within 14 days. Because Root is digital content and services that we make available to you immediately, by subscribing and starting to use paid features within that period you expressly request immediate performance and acknowledge that, once the service for a billing period has been fully supplied, you lose the right to cancel that period for a full refund. For ongoing subscriptions, if you cancel within 14 days of your initial purchase we will refund a proportionate amount reflecting the part of the period you have not yet used. This does not affect any other statutory rights you may have. To exercise this right, email support@roottutor.com.

6. Changes to pricing

We may change the price of any plan at any time. Price changes take effect at your next renewal. We will give you at least 30 days' advance notice by email and/or in-app notice before a price change applies to your account. If you do not agree to the new price, you can cancel before the renewal date and your subscription will end at the end of your current period without further charges.

Promotional or introductory prices are time-limited; once the promotional period ends, the standard price for the relevant plan applies. In particular: any introductory discount we offer at the end of a free trial (for example, 20% off the first month of Pro) applies only to the first billing cycle. From the second billing cycle onward your subscription renews at the regular published price for the plan you chose. Renewal at the standard price will appear on your receipts and on the Settings → Subscription page before the renewal date.

7. Changes to features and usage limits

The Service depends on third-party AI infrastructure whose costs and availability change over time. To keep Root sustainable, we reserve the right to:

  • Add, modify, or remove features, capabilities, or AI models at any time.
  • Adjust daily message caps, test-paper caps, file upload limits, and any other usage allowances on any plan.
  • Apply technical limits, queues, or temporary throttling to maintain Service stability or to respond to abuse.
  • Discontinue any plan or the entire Service, with reasonable notice where practical.

Where a change materially reducesa paid feature you are currently paying for during your existing billing period, we will give you advance notice and offer one of the following at our choice: (a) keep your current plan unchanged for the remainder of your paid period, or (b) cancel and refund the unused portion of that period on a pro-rata basis. Changes that take effect at your next renewal are treated under Section 6 (we will give 30 days' advance notice).

Non-material changes — including bug fixes, model upgrades that maintain or improve quality, redesigns of the UI, and adjustments to how usage is counted — do not trigger a refund right.

8. Free tier and trials

The free tier is provided as-is for evaluation and casual use. Free limits, features, and availability may be changed or discontinued at any time without notice. Trial offers, where provided, are subject to their specific terms; once a trial ends, your account either reverts to the free tier or, if you have provided payment details for a paid plan, transitions to the paid plan as disclosed at sign-up.

9. Refunds

Except where required by law or expressly stated in these Terms (including Section 5.6), all fees are non-refundable. Where you have a statutory right to a refund or cancellation, we will honour it. To request a legally required refund, email support@roottutor.com.

10. Referral programme

From time to time we offer a referral programme that rewards you and/or the person you invite when they join Root. Referral rewards:

  • are personal to your account and have no cash value;
  • are granted only when the person you refer is a genuine new user who actively uses the Service — we may require a minimum level of real activity before a reward is credited;
  • may be withheld, reversed, or revoked if we reasonably believe a referral is fraudulent, self-referred, created using duplicate, fake, or automated accounts, or otherwise abuses the programme; and
  • may be changed, limited, or ended by us at any time.

We may use device, network, and account signals to detect and prevent referral abuse. Our determination of referral eligibility is final.

11. Virtual items, rewards, and gamification

The Service includes gamified features such as streaks, experience points (XP), badges, trees, in-app shop items, and streak freezes (together, “Virtual Items”). Virtual Items:

  • have no monetary value and are not your property;
  • are licensed to you for use within the Service only, and cannot be sold, transferred, redeemed, or exchanged for cash or anything of value outside the Service, except where we expressly allow it; and
  • may be modified, suspended, reset, expired, or removed by us at any time, and we are not liable for any loss of Virtual Items.

Some boosts or add-ons may be available to purchase with real money; those purchases are subject to Sections 5 and 9 (billing and refunds). However acquired, the underlying Virtual Items remain subject to this Section.

12. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation.
  • Attempt to access, interfere with, or probe the Service, our infrastructure, or other users' accounts in ways not authorised by us.
  • Reverse engineer, scrape, mirror, frame, or systematically extract content or data from the Service except as allowed by law.
  • Use Root, or its outputs, to build or train any competing AI product or model, or to evaluate AI products against ours, without our written consent.
  • Resell, sublicense, or share access to the Service with people who do not have their own account.
  • Attempt to bypass safety measures, content rules, or usage limits, or to manipulate the AI into producing content that violates these Terms.
  • Use the Service to generate content that is illegal, abusive, defamatory, infringes intellectual property rights, sexualises minors, harasses others, or facilitates harm.
  • Submit malware, spam, or attempt to overwhelm the Service.
  • Misrepresent your age, identity, or affiliation.

13. AI output disclaimer

The Service uses AI models to generate explanations, test questions, answers, marking, and feedback. AI output may be wrong, outdated, incomplete, biased, or misleading, even when it sounds confident, and despite the safety measures we apply.

Root's output is provided for educational support only. It is not professional advice — including, but not limited to, medical, legal, financial, psychological, or safety advice. Do not rely on it for high-stakes decisions. For anything that materially matters, verify with your textbook, your teacher, a qualified professional, or another authoritative source. If the AI ever produces content you believe is harmful or inappropriate, please report it to support@roottutor.com.

14. No guarantee of results

Root is a study aid. We do not guarantee any particular educational result. Using the Service does not guarantee improved grades, exam success, test scores, admission outcomes, or any specific level of learning or performance — all of which depend on many factors outside our control. Any examples, testimonials, or progress indicators in the Service are illustrative and are not promises of results.

Root's marking, scoring, progress tracking, and “mastery” indicators are automated estimates generated by AI and may be inaccurate. They are not an authoritative or official assessment of your knowledge or ability and must not be relied upon as such.

15. Academic integrity

You are responsible for your own academic conduct. Many schools, universities, and exam boards have rules about the use of AI tools in coursework, assessments, and exams. Before using Root's output in any work that will be assessed, check and follow your institution's policy. Root is designed to help you understand and learn, not to ghostwrite assessable work for you, and we are not responsible for the consequences of any academic misconduct you commit using the Service.

16. Safeguarding and wellbeing

Root is an educational tool. It is not a counselling, mental-health, medical, crisis, or emergency service, and it is not a substitute for help from a qualified professional or a trusted adult. The AI is not a person, cannot offer real human support, and cannot help you in an emergency.

If you are in crisis, struggling with your mental health, or in danger, please contact a trusted adult and the appropriate emergency or support service in your country immediately. In the UK, for example, call 999 in an emergency, or contact Childline on 0800 1111 or the Samaritans on 116 123. Do not rely on the Service for help in an emergency.

While we apply safety measures to the AI, we cannot guarantee that it will recognise distress or respond appropriately, and we are not responsible for providing crisis or wellbeing support. You should not share personal crises, or sensitive personal information about yourself or others, with the AI expecting a confidential or human response.

17. Your content; licence to us

You retain ownership of the messages, files, notes, answers, and other content you submit to the Service (“Your Content”). You are responsible for ensuring you have the rights to submit Your Content and that it does not infringe anyone else's rights.

You must not upload or submit:

  • personal information about other people (for example, photos, names, or details of classmates, teachers, or family) without their permission, or any sensitive or special-category information about anyone;
  • content you do not have the right to share, or that infringes anyone's intellectual property beyond what the law permits (such as fair dealing or fair use for private study); or
  • content that is unlawful or breaches Section 12 (Acceptable use).

You grant Root a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, transmit, display, and process Your Content solely to operate, secure, and improve the Service for you. We do not use Your Content to train AI models, and we do not sell it. This licence ends when Your Content is deleted from the Service.

We may remove Your Content if we reasonably believe it violates these Terms or applicable law.

Feedback. If you send us ideas, suggestions, or feedback about the Service (for example, through the in-app feedback button), you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free right to use it for any purpose without restriction or compensation. Feedback helps us improve Root — thank you for it.

18. Reporting content and intellectual-property complaints

If you believe content on the Service infringes your intellectual property rights, or otherwise violates these Terms or your rights, contact us at legal@roottutor.com with enough detail to identify the content and your claim. We will review reports we receive and may remove content, disable access, or suspend accounts where we consider it appropriate, and may pass relevant information to the parties involved or to authorities where required by law.

19. Our intellectual property

The Service, including its design, code, branding, logos, text, graphics, and the underlying software, is owned by Root or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property law. We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Service in accordance with these Terms. No other rights are granted to you.

You may use AI output produced for you for your personal, non-commercial educational purposes, subject to the rest of these Terms.

20. Third-party services and links

The Service relies on, and may contain links to, third-party services and websites — for example, our payment processor (Stripe) and our AI providers (Google and Anthropic). We are not responsible for the content, policies, or practices of third parties, and your use of them is at your own risk and subject to their own terms.

21. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account.

We may suspend or terminate your account, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms, if your use of the Service poses a security or legal risk, if continued provision is no longer commercially or technically viable, or if required by law. If we terminate your paid subscription without cause, we will refund the unused portion of your then-current billing period on a pro-rata basis. We are not liable for any other loss arising from termination.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including ownership, limitations of liability, disclaimers, governing law, and any payment obligations accrued before termination — will survive.

22. Disclaimers

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, or uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that AI outputs will be accurate, that the Service will meet your requirements, or that any defects will be corrected.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any rights you have under consumer-protection law that cannot be excluded or limited.

23. Limitation of liability

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for: (a) death or personal injury caused by our negligence; (b) fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or (c) any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.

Subject to the paragraph above, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, Root and its officers, directors, employees, and service providers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or opportunity, arising out of or related to your use of the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Subject to the first paragraph of this Section, our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising out of or related to these Terms or the Service, in any 12-month period, will not exceed the greater of (a) the total amounts you paid us for the Service in that 12-month period, or (b) USD $50.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you. Where a limitation is not permitted, our liability is limited to the smallest extent allowed by law.

24. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Root and its personnel from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of (a) Your Content, (b) your use of the Service in breach of these Terms, or (c) your violation of any law or third-party right.

25. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Subject to mandatory consumer-protection laws that may apply where you live, you and Root agree that the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service.

Before starting formal proceedings, you agree to first contact us at support@roottutor.com so we can try to resolve the issue informally.

26. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email and/or in-app notice at least 30 days before the changes take effect (sooner if required by law or to address a security or legal issue). If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you must stop using the Service before the changes take effect; continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance.

27. Miscellaneous

  • Entire agreement. These Terms and the documents they reference (including the Privacy Policy) are the entire agreement between you and Root regarding the Service.
  • Severability. If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest will remain in effect.
  • No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of that right or provision.
  • Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our written consent. We may assign these Terms in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
  • Notices. We may give you notice by email to the address on your account or via in-app notice. You may give us notice at legal@roottutor.com.
  • Force majeure. We are not responsible for any delay or failure to perform caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including outages of third-party providers, internet failures, or acts of governments.
  • Relationship. These Terms do not create any agency, partnership, joint venture, or employment relationship.
  • Language. These Terms are drafted in English. Any translation is provided for convenience only; the English version prevails.
