A grade 7 in IB Maths is not just about being good at maths. It is about understanding exactly what the IB examiner wants to see, in what order, with what level of detail, and then practising until producing that becomes automatic under pressure.
To get a 7 in IB Maths AA or AI, you need: full command of the syllabus topics for your course and level, the ability to show working clearly and earn method marks even when the final answer is wrong, strong GDC skills (AI especially), and enough past-paper practice that the question styles feel familiar under pressure.

The five things that separate 6s from 7s
Based on the IB's own Subject Reports (published annually and available on the IB website), these are the most consistent sources of avoidable mark loss:
1. Not showing method for "hence" questions. When a question says "hence find..." it is telling you to use the result from part (a). Using a fresh method may not earn the marks, even if the answer is correct.
2. Premature rounding. The IB expects answers given to three significant figures unless stated otherwise, but intermediate working should be kept at full calculator precision. Rounding midway through a multi-step problem cascades into a wrong final answer.
3. Missing the domain or context. A question about distance cannot have a negative answer. A probability cannot exceed 1. Geometry questions often require you to reject extraneous solutions. Check every answer makes sense in context.
4. Weak algebraic fluency on Paper 1 (AA). If completing the square, logarithm rules, or trigonometric identities require effort to recall, you will run out of time. These need to be automatic.
5. Losing marks in proof questions. Proofs require every step to be justified. Writing "therefore..." without showing why is a common mark loss point.
Addressing these five areas does not require learning new content. It requires a deliberate change in how you approach the exam.
Use past papers as your primary revision tool, done properly
Research on retrieval practice consistently shows that testing yourself on material is significantly more effective than re-studying it. What to revise topic by topic (AA vs AI)
For AA HL and SL, the highest-yield topics for Paper 1 are: functions (transformations, inverses, compositions), logarithms and exponentials, trigonometric identities, sequences and series, and differentiation. Calculus, both differentiation and integration, carries significant weight in HL.
For AI HL and SL, the highest-yield areas are: statistics and probability (the largest topic block), GDC-based calculus, linear regression, and chi-squared tests. The IA: start it before you think you need to
The IA is worth 20% of your final grade. In a borderline case between a 6 and a 7, a well-executed IA can close that gap without requiring any improvement in exam performance.
The most common IA mistakes are: choosing a topic too descriptive to involve meaningful mathematics, not referring to the assessment criteria until too late, and underestimating the time the write-up takes.
Pick a topic that genuinely interests you. This is not just a wellbeing point; it reflects in the quality of reflection and personal engagement.
