How to Take Notes Effectively (Methods That Actually Work)

Most students take a lot of notes. Most students also cannot remember much of what they wrote. The notes look thorough; the problem is in how they were made.

Effective note-taking is not about writing more. The research is clear that re-reading notes is among the least effective revision strategies. The best notes are built to be tested: they use questions rather than sentences and are reviewed by retrieving information from memory, not by reading the same page again.

Why Most Notes Do Not Help

The biggest problem with how most students take notes is simple: they copy.

In class, you write down what the teacher says, often word for word. From a textbook, you copy sentences out. This feels productive because you are filling pages, but the cognitive work involved is minimal. You are performing a transcription task, not a thinking task.

John Dunlosky and colleagues at Kent State University spent years reviewing the research on study techniques. Their 2013 paper in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated ten common methods on how well they actually improve learning. Cornell Notes: A Method Built for Retrieval

Cornell notes is one of the most widely used structured systems, developed by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University, in the 1950s. It became popular because it builds retrieval practice directly into the format.

The layout divides a single page into three sections:

  • Main notes area (right two-thirds of the page): write your notes here during class or while reading. Use short phrases, diagrams, and your own words rather than full sentences.
  • Cue column (left third of the page): after the lesson, write questions or prompts for each section of your notes. "What are the three stages of mitosis?" or "Define: osmosis." These become your self-test prompts.
  • Summary box (bottom of the page): write a two or three sentence summary of the whole page in your own words after you have finished taking notes.

The power is in what happens next. Cover the main notes area and use the cue questions to retrieve the answers from memory. If you can answer a question confidently, move on. If you cannot, read the answer, understand it, then try again from scratch. This is active recall, the single highest-utility study technique in the Dunlosky et al. (2013) review.

The summary box works as a built-in comprehension check. If you cannot summarise the page in your own words, you have not understood it yet.

Handwriting or Typing?

Whether to handwrite or type is worth thinking about carefully. In 2014, Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer published a study in Psychological Science in which students attended a lecture and either took notes by hand or on a laptop. On a later test, the laptop group had written far more words, but the longhand group performed significantly better on conceptual questions.

The explanation is that typing is fast enough to transcribe almost verbatim, so students do not need to process what was said. Handwriting is slower, which forces you to rephrase ideas in your own words. That rephrasing is a form of thinking, and thinking is what creates learning.

For taking notes in class and for making initial revision notes from a textbook, handwriting has a real advantage for understanding. For organising notes you have already processed, or for subjects where you need to draft extended writing, typing is perfectly fine. The practical rule is: use handwriting when you encounter new material for the first time; use whatever tool works for you during later review.

How to Take Notes During Self-Study

Most GCSE and A-level revision involves working alone from textbooks, revision guides, and past papers. The same principles apply, with one important change.

Do not write notes while you read. Read the section first, close the book, and write what you remember in your own words. Then open the book, check what you missed, and add it. This forces retrieval before you have a formal set of notes, and the resulting notes record what you actually understood rather than what the page said.

A few practical rules when writing self-study notes:

  • Use questions, not statements. Instead of "Mitosis produces genetically identical cells," write in the cue column: "What does mitosis produce, and why?" Your right-hand note is the answer. Every page becomes a self-test sheet automatically.
  • Keep them concise. One A4 page of processed notes is worth more than five pages of copied text. If you are consistently filling more than a page per topic, you are probably still copying rather than processing.
  • Draw diagrams from memory. In sciences and maths especially, being able to reconstruct a diagram from scratch is more useful than prose notes. Sketch it out as part of your review, then check against the original.

Reviewing Your Notes: The Part That Determines What You Remember

Writing good notes is half the work. The other half is how you review them, and this is where most students lose the benefit they worked hard to build.

The research on memory, going back to Hermann Ebbinghaus's studies of the forgetting curve in the 1880s, is consistent: memory decays rapidly after learning unless something interrupts the decline. A 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues, published in Psychological Bulletin, reviewed more than 250 studies and confirmed that spacing reviews over time produces substantially better long-term retention than reviewing everything at once.

A practical review schedule for a set of notes:

Notes for Different Subjects

Different subjects call for slightly different approaches within the same core method.

Sciences and maths: diagrams and worked examples are often more valuable than prose notes. When reviewing, try drawing the diagram from memory or completing the worked example step by step before checking.
