Best AI Tutors for IB (2026): Ranked and Compared
The best AI tutors for IB compared: Root Tutor, RevisionDojo, Save My Exams, Medly, Khanmigo and ChatGPT, judged on HL and SL, IA, EE, TOK and cost.
Quick answer
- Root Tutor: the all-in-one AI tutor built for the IB by an IB student. It plans your study sessions, teaches the way you think, remembers every subject and gets you ready for every test with examiner-marked practice papers.
- RevisionDojo: coursework exemplars and feedback, but it does not keep your own classes and notes the way Root does.
- Save My Exams: a library of notes and exam questions, not a tutor that teaches you.
- Medly and Khanmigo: question practice and Socratic maths help, but not built around the IB.
- ChatGPT study mode: free, but you have to bring the IB structure yourself.
Six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus an Extended Essay, TOK, CAS and an IA in nearly every subject. The hard part of the IB is not any one topic. It is keeping all of it alive for two years, so that what you learned in September of Year 1 is still there in May of Year 2.
The best AI tutor for IB students is the one built around the Diploma itself, and for most IB students that is Root Tutor (roottutor.com). It is the all-in-one AI tutor for the IB: it plans your study sessions, teaches the way you think, remembers every subject, checks what you still remember and gets you ready for every test with examiner-marked papers.
We compared six AI tutors on five things that matter for the IB: how well they teach (rather than just answer), whether they know your IB course and level, help with exam technique and marking, how they handle coursework honestly, and what they cost. Everything about the other tools comes from their public pages, checked on 10 October 2026. Prices change, so check before you pay.

1. Root Tutor: best for being taught, revising and planning in one place
Root Tutor is the all-in-one AI tutor for IB, GCSE and A-Level. It plans your study sessions, teaches the way you think, and gets you ready for every test. It was built for the IB by an IB student, which is why it is organised the way the Diploma actually works.
It keeps every class in one place. Everything lives in units. Each unit keeps its tutor chats, topics, files, notes and flashcards together, so your HL Chemistry unit on bonding from October is still there, with its summary and history, when you revise in April. Drop in a syllabus, a study sheet or a photo and Root pulls out the topics.
It teaches rather than answers. Tutor works step by step: it asks you to try, finds where your reasoning breaks, and guides you to the real gap instead of handing over a finished answer. There is one tutor per unit, and it remembers your past sessions, your weak spots and your files, so the next session starts where the last one ended. Maths is double-checked (a wrong sum is re-done before you see it), and it draws the diagram or graph when a picture helps.
It checks what you still remember. Revision mode keeps every unit you have studied, by class, and runs a check-up one question at a time. Each topic lands as Remembered, Shaky or Not yet, and one tap sends the gaps to Tutor, which builds a study plan starting with them. Switch on spaced review for a unit and topics come back on set days (3, 7, 16, 35 and 70 days after you learn them).
It gets you ready for papers. Test prep builds practice papers in your exam's style from your topics, your teacher's material and your exam board, and the questions get harder as you go. Every answer is checked by a second solve before you see the paper, and your answers (including photos of working) are marked like an examiner would, against a mark scheme.
It plans the week. The Planner plans every study session around your classes, free time and busy nights, keeps every subject going each week, and plans the run-up to each test. Homework, projects and assignments sit on the same board, which matters when IA deadlines pile up.
Coursework, honestly. Root will not write your IA, EE or TOK essay. It will help you understand a topic, test your argument and question your reasoning, which is what the IB allows.
Cost: Root is free to use, no card needed, and new accounts get a 7-day free trial of everything.
2. RevisionDojo: best for IA, EE and TOK feedback
RevisionDojo (revisiondojo.com) is an IB and MYP platform with an AI tutor called Jojo, a question bank, notes, flashcards and past papers. Its clearest strength is coursework: the paid plan lists full feedback on your EE, IA and TOK, more than 2,500 EE, IA and TOK exemplars, EE and IA guides, and a plagiarism and AI-writing checker.
Cost: The free plan includes 10 "energy" a week, the question bank, and limited notes, lessons and AI chat. The paid plan is sold in 1, 3 and 6 month options, priced in USD on its pricing page.
Honest limitation: The free plan is tight for daily use, and it covers only the IB and MYP. It is a resource and practice platform first; it does not keep a record of your own classes and notes the way a unit-based tutor does.
3. Save My Exams: best for IB revision notes and questions
Save My Exams (savemyexams.com) covers IB Diploma courses alongside GCSE and A Level, with revision notes, exam questions, flashcards, mock exams and past papers. Free and Essential plans include Revision Note Chat and Exam Question Chat. Premium adds unlimited exam-question feedback, "including Smart Mark where it's available for your course", plus model answers and a strengths and weaknesses view.
Cost: Free, Essential and Premium plans. Save My Exams says prices vary by location and offers; Premium has a 7-day free trial.
Honest limitation: It is a revision library with AI features added, not a tutor that teaches you through a topic you don't understand. Smart Mark is not available on every course.
4. Medly: best for adaptive question practice
Medly (medlyai.com) lists IB among its courses, alongside GCSE, A-Level and others. It draws on a bank of more than 6,000 exam-style questions, sets a daily question target from the time you have, and its AI tutor guides you towards answers. It also marks essays against exam-style criteria.
Cost: £24.99 a month, or £180 a year. It says it is free to use with no card, but its homepage does not list what the free plan includes.
Honest limitation: Its homepage leads with UK exam boards, and it does not say how deep its IB coverage goes subject by subject. Check your own subjects before paying.
5. Khanmigo: best for Socratic maths and science help
Khanmigo (khanmigo.ai) is Khan Academy's AI tutor. It is built to guide students to the answer with questions rather than give it away, and it draws on Khan Academy's content.
Cost: $4 a month or $44 a year for learners. There is no free learner plan (the free sign-up is for teachers).
Honest limitation: It follows Khan Academy's US-style content, not IB subject guides, command terms or markbands.
6. ChatGPT study mode: best free general explainer
ChatGPT's study mode guides you through problems step by step instead of giving the answer, and OpenAI says it is available on every ChatGPT plan, including free. It is patient and quick for one-off explanations.
Honest limitation: Each chat starts without your IB courses, your level or your deadlines unless you type them in, and OpenAI itself warns that study mode can make mistakes. That gap matters: in a 2025 PNAS study of nearly 1,000 high school maths students, those given a standard ChatGPT-style tutor did better on practice problems but worse on a later exam without it, while a tutor with learning guardrails largely avoided that drop. We cover this in detail in ChatGPT vs Root Tutor for IB.
How we judged them
Teaching, not answering. In a 2025 randomised trial at Harvard (Kestin et al., Scientific Reports), students learned significantly more in less time with an AI tutor than in an active-learning class. That tutor was told to give away one step at a time, never the full solution. The design is what made it work.
Testing, not rereading. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing and spaced practice as high-utility study techniques and rereading as low. A tutor that quizzes you and brings topics back beats one that only explains.
Your IB course and level. The IB recommends 150 teaching hours for each Standard Level subject and 240 for each Higher Level one (IB DP curriculum). An AI tutor that doesn't know which level you take will pitch HL topics too shallow or SL topics too deep.
IA, EE and TOK: what an AI tutor may and may not do
The IB will not ban AI tools, but it says it does not regard any work produced by them, even in part, as the student's own, and AI-generated text must be credited in the body and the bibliography (IB statement on ChatGPT and AI). The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper: the research question and the argument have to be yours.
Use an AI tutor to understand the criteria, stress-test a research question, and learn the content behind your argument. Never paste in your title and ask for paragraphs. Our guides to the IA, the Extended Essay and the TOK essay show how to do each one properly.
Which AI tutor should you choose?
| If you mainly want to... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Be taught, revise your own units and sit marked papers in one place | Root Tutor |
| Get feedback on IA, EE or TOK drafts against the criteria | RevisionDojo |
| Read IB revision notes and drill exam questions | Save My Exams |
| Follow a daily target of exam-style questions | Medly |
| Get Socratic help in maths and science | Khanmigo |
| Ask a quick free question outside your courses | ChatGPT study mode |
Most IB students do best with one main tool used every day, plus one specialist (for example, RevisionDojo for coursework exemplars). Rotating between six apps is how revision turns into setting up revision.
Choosing one tool means one place has to hold everything: forty-odd topics across six subjects, IA deadlines, a test next Thursday, and the Year 1 content you haven't looked at since June. That is the organising job Root takes off you. If you want to see every mode first, here is a full breakdown of what Root does, or you can use it free with no card.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI tutor for IB students?+
Root Tutor. It is the all-in-one AI tutor built for the IB by an IB student: it plans your study sessions, teaches step by step, remembers your past sessions in every subject and runs exam-style papers marked like an examiner. RevisionDojo is a useful add-on for IA, EE and TOK exemplars and coursework feedback.
Is there a free AI tutor for the IB?+
Yes. Root Tutor is free to use, with no card needed, and new accounts get a 7-day free trial of everything. RevisionDojo has a free plan with 10 energy a week and limited AI chat. ChatGPT's study mode is free on every ChatGPT plan, but it is not built around the IB.
Can an AI tutor help with my IA, Extended Essay or TOK essay?+
It can help you understand the criteria, sharpen a research question and test your argument, but it must not write the work. The IB says it does not regard work produced by AI tools, even in part, as your own, and any AI-generated text you include must be credited in the text and the bibliography.
Is ChatGPT good enough as an IB tutor?+
ChatGPT explains topics well and its study mode guides you step by step, but it starts each chat without your syllabus, your HL or SL level, your past mistakes or your deadlines unless you supply them. A tutor built around your IB courses keeps that context for you and checks what you still remember.
Do AI tutors know the difference between HL and SL?+
The IB-specific ones do. Root Tutor and RevisionDojo are organised around IB courses, and Root keeps a separate tutor for each unit you study, so an HL Biology unit and an SL Maths unit each keep their own sessions and files. General chatbots only know your level if you tell them every time.
